Etched Serving Spoon

This is the very last project coming out of my SoCal studio. 

This spoon  was made as a gift for my in-laws, who have been so supportive of us while my husband has been in residency. They’re Persian, so I made a spoon for serving rice, etched with a floral pattern and “nush e jaan”, which roughly means “enjoy the food”.  

Using the same etching process as I do for jewelry, this was just a giant piece. I applied the pnp resist and etched with ferric nitrate, before forming and polishing. My tools are limited: I generally only work at a jewelry scale, and do not have larger stakes for forming so I had to make do with my largest dapping tools. I also do not have a buffing machine, and ended up using my flex shaft with silicone polishing wheels and a sunshine cloth. It’s not as perfect of a polish as a buffing machine would allow, but pretty good given the tools available.
