Plique a jour is a specialty enameling process which creates a mini-stained glass effect. Normally enamel (powdered glass) is applied to the surface of a metal sheet. This technique uses surface tention to fill a small cut-out in the metal with wet enamel. The piece is then heated to melt the enamel. This process is repeated until all of the cells are filled, sometimes 15 individual firings!
